Top 9 AI Features in OxygenOS 15 You Should Be Using

1 week ago 2

OnePlus recently unveiled its latest Android 15-based OxygenOS 15. The new update is already available in beta on select models and brings several visual changes and performance improvements, including new AI-powered features. Yes, OnePlus has finally joined the artificial intelligence race with features like reflection eraser, photo unblur, AI Notes, AI toolbox, and more.

Let’s explore all the AI features you get with the latest OxygenOS 15 on your OnePlus smartphone.

1. AI Eraser

While you could readily remove unwanted people and objects from pictures using Google Magic Eraser, OnePlus has its own AI Eraser in its Photos app. This is one of the first AI features to come to OnePlus phones and was announced in April 2024.

Open Gallery and head to the picture you wish to edit. Tap Edit > AI Editor > AI Eraser.

  • Smart lasso – Smart Lasso lets you draw a circle around an object, automatically recognizes its edges, and removes it entirely.
  • Paint over – Paint Over allows you to select a brush size and paint over the area you want to remove.
  • Remove people – Detects unwanted people in the photo (such as those in the background) and erases them in one click.

2. AI Unblur

AI Unblur is another Google Photos feature that OnePlus has adopted for its Gallery app. If the photos you’ve captured turn out blurry or lack detail—say, due to movement while taking pictures of pets or an unsteady hand—you can use the AI Unblur tool. It will then use AI to remove motion blur and sharpen the photo, making blurry photos usable again.

To unblur a photo, open the blurry picture in the Gallery app. Tap Edit > AI Editor > AI Unblur. Wait for the image to process, then tap Done to see the result.

You can use the tool multiple times on the same picture until you achieve the desired effect. Below, you can see regular and unblurred images side-by-side showing what OnePlus’s AI does to improve the photo. Notice how it sharpens up the dog’s fur and the tile in the background.

3. AI Reflection Eraser

AI Reflection Eraser is similar to the AI Eraser for removing reflections. This OxygenOS 15 feature uses artificial intelligence to eliminate unwanted reflections from photos. The steps to use it are similar to the features described above, as it is also part of the AI Editor in the OnePlus Photos app.

Open Photos and navigate to the picture from which you want to remove reflections. Tap Edit > AI Editor > AI Reflection Eraser. Your phone will automatically detect and remove unwanted reflections from the image, and you can then save the edited photo.

In the above picture, notice how it removed the reflection of buildings from the swimming pool water, making the image overall cleaner and with fewer distracting elements.

4. AI Detail Boost

Another Oxygen OS 15 feature is the AI Detail Boost that improves image clarity, making photos appear sharper and more detailed—especially useful for low-resolution or slightly blurry images.

To use AI Detail Boost, open the Photos app and select the photo you want to enhance. Tap Edit > AI Editor and choose AI Detail Boost.

The tool will process the image to improve sharpness and reveal more details. Once the enhancement is complete, tap Done in the bottom left corner to save the updated photo.

Above is a picture of the Jal Mahal I took during my trip to Jaipur, India. While my phone captured the photo well, it lacked detail because it was nighttime. AI Detail Boost helped enhance the overall image of the monument.

5. Circle to Search

Google’s Circle to Search feature lets you quickly search anything on your screen using Google Lens. It first debuted with the Galaxy S24 and was later rolled out to other Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices. It has now arrived on OnePlus smartphones with OxygenOS 15.

To enable it, go to Settings > System & updates > System navigation, and toggle on Circle to Search. Now, long-press the navigation bar or home button at the bottom of the screen until an animation waves across the display. Circle around any object or image on your screen to search for it on the web.

Google will show you visually similar results along with websites where the image or product is available. Circle to Search also lets you quickly search for currently playing music or translate your screen. These options appear at the bottom right when you trigger the feature.

6. Pass Scan

With the new Pass Scan feature, you can scan and add your physical boarding passes directly using your phone’s camera or even scan them from your gallery. Once the image is detected as a boarding pass, an option to add it to your wallet will appear automatically.

The feature extracts necessary details, such as flight information, and saves them to Google Wallet on your device. You can then quickly access your boarding pass from the Google Wallet app. However, scanning your boarding pass requires an internet connection.

7. AI Assistant for Notes

The OnePlus Notes app now has an AI Assistant that helps you take better notes. You can use AI to format the notes better, check and fix grammar, and even set a Casual or Formal tone. You can further Elaborate (i.e., convert the note to a more detailed form) or Shorten (to turn it concise).

One feature I particularly love is Continue Writing. Let’s say you start a note with: “Hi, I won’t be available on 1 November due to Diwali, ” and hit it—the AI will automatically add something like: “I’ll be celebrating the festival with my family and friends, and will be offline during this time.” This feature seamlessly continues your thought, saving you time and effort.

8. AI Toolbox 2.0

OxygenOS 15 brings several existing AI features to more devices. These features, including AI Speak, AI Summary, and AI Writer, were originally part of the AI Toolkit introduced in OxygenOS 14.1. This update also includes a new feature called AI Reply, part of the upgraded AI Toolbox 2.0.

At the time of writing, these features are available on a limited selection of phones including OnePlus Nord 4 and Nord CE 4 Lite. You can access these AI features directly from the Smart Sidebar.

AI Speak: This feature uses AI to read articles aloud, similar to Chrome’s Read Aloud feature. It offers options to switch between male and female voices, adjust playback speed, and skip forward or backward by sentence.

AI Summary: AI Summary uses a cloud-based generative AI model to condense information into a brief, numbered list, allowing you to quickly grasp the main points of an article. You can then copy, share, or save the summary to Notes.

AI Writer: Acting as a personal writing assistant, AI Writer automatically activates when you’re on social apps, email, or other text-editing screens. You can prompt it to generate text for you, with options to Regenerate or Copy the output.

AI Reply: This new feature analyzes on-screen content to generate quick replies in different tones. It works on messaging apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat, and also lets you compose replies in a tone of your choice.

9. Intelligent Search in Global Search

Intelligent Search is another AI feature to be integrated into the Global Search feature in OxygenOS 15. This feature, which hasn’t arrived yet, will enable contextual file searching directly from Global Search.

For context, Global Search is similar to Spotlight on iPhone and can be triggered with a simple swipe down on the home screen. You can natively search for apps and contacts, but with Intelligent Search, you can search through local files as well. This means you can do things like extract information from a PDF stored on your phone, all directly from Global Search.

Intelligent Search is powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, which allows it to understand the content of your files and provide more accurate search results. It can also understand natural language queries, so you can ask questions like “What’s the final contract price in this document?” and it will find the answer for you.

Embracing AI on OxygenOS 15!

Beyond the AI features discussed above, OxygenOS 15 switches from Google Assistant to Google Gemini, which means you now have a more capable assistant at the helm.

The software now covers almost every task you’d expect AI to help with. There are plenty of options to edit and tweak photos, use Circle to Search, organize and get the most out of your notes, and get assistance with writing emails or messages anywhere.

Overall, OxygenOS 15 is a step in the right direction, and we believe more features will be added over time while existing ones continue to be refined.
