'Trailblazer': Respected Australian filmmaker Corinne Cantrill dies aged 96 as tributes flow

The Australian film industry is mourning the loss of one of its own this week with news of the death of respected filmmaker Corinne Cantrill.

Cantrill, who notably worked alongside her filmmaker husband Arthur Cantrill for years, died at the age of 96 with an obituary published in The Sydney Morning Herald confirming the sad news.

The short obituary describes Corinne as a "provocative avant-garde film maker" and confirms she is survived by her husband, two sons and a granddaughter.

"Dear wife of Arthur, a loving mother to Aaron & Ivor, loved grandmother to Rita Rachel," the obituary reads.

One student commented on the public obituary and said Cantrill's work influenced their own.

The obituary states the late filmmaker has been cremated and will be laid to rest soon.

Remembering the stars we've lost in 2025

A tribute was shared on Facebook by a former director of the Melbourne Film Festival, Geoffrey Gardner, who called Cantrill a "trailblazer" in the industry.

"Vale to the remarkable Australian film-maker Corinne Cantrill who, with husband Arthur Cantrill blazed the trail for Australian independent and experimental film-making for close to four decades and an astonishing 150 films or thereabouts," he wrote.

"Remembered by many around the world who saw their films and gained a unique and very personal insight into Australian life and the Australian landscape," he added in part of his public message.

Hailing from Castlemaine, Corinne and Arthur enjoyed successful careers for years in the arts, spanning across decades.

They are known for works including Harry Hooton among others, and Corinne is known for her 1984 autobiography film In This Life's Body.
