TV presenter Hugh Cornish has died at the age of 90.

Hugh is credited with having made history in his native Australia as the first person to appear, and speak, on Queensland television back in 1959. His son Tim announced his death in a post on social media, writing: "Last night we lost one of the remaining burning stars. He was the greatest gentleman you could ever hope to meet."

There have also been tributes from fans, with one tweeting: "More than a legend. Thank you and Rest in Peace Hugh Cornish. Let us hope our Brisbane TV News give you a decent respectful send off tonight. Bravo Mister Cornish, we thank you immensely."

Someone else wrote: "Watched him in 1959 when he became the first person to appear on television in Queensland. Two years later I was in his team that organised 3 Charity Telethons. Many years later we organised a Bastille Day lunch. He was a real good bloke. One of very best."

Hugh is remembered for his involvement with the launch of television in Queensland, having been the first person to appear when Brisbane's Channel 9 launched in 1959. He was a newsreader for the station but later became general manager. He later worked for Channel 7 but made a return to Channel 9 when the analogue signal was switched off in 2013.
