Conversations about racial identity can be very sensitive, especially given how certain races are perceived and treated in the United States. Trick Daddy recently came under fire for questioning why Black people are referred to as “African American.”
“I’m trying to figure out how ‘Afro’ get in front of my motherf**king race,” the 50-year-old rapper said in a video. “I ain’t never been to Afro-ca. I have never been to Africa. Afro or Africa. Never been there. I’m not from Africa.” The Florida rapper reminded viewers that he was born in Goulds, Fla., before moving and being raised in “Pork-N-Beans” projects in Liberty City.
“[I] ain’t never went to Africa, ain’t thinking about going there,” he continued. “And I heard it’s a beautiful place, yes. And I know it’s the motherland, yes. But not my mother, not her mother, and not her mother’s mother, that ain’t their land. Americans’ real true land is right here, on U.S. soils.” Watch below.
Trick Daddy’s statement yielded a mixed bag of comments. “Exactly!!!” one fan wrote emphatically. I agree with him!” Another fan said, “Technically, he is right; he is not from Africa. However, all Black people in the Americas are descendants of the African diaspora. Our roots are African, but our culture is not.”
One more user defended the “Take It To Da House” rapper and wondered why people were so offended by his statement: “Why yall care what Trick say? He not wrong but why yall mad? You don’t see Jamaicans, Dominicans, Haitans etc..calling themselves African Haitian and dont give me that Afro- bullcrap they latch on to people to call them black either. The truth is you have no connection to Africa any longer so he right. Blacks in America need to decide WTF they are.”
Now those who opposed him, really opposed him. “As an African, feel free to drop the ‘African’ so you Claim ‘American’ and see how well that goes for you,” one user wrote with a thumbs up emoji. “When the wrong person get the mic at church,” another fan wrote with a laughing emoji. “Your face screams Kunta Kente and you were born in Florida….you are African American,” one final user wrote.
This wasn’t Trick Daddy’s first controversial statement about race, though he took a different route several years ago. In 2016, he called Black women “useless” while praising white and Latina women.
“These Spanish, these white h*es, they just started getting finer than a motherf**ker,” he said in a video. “Y’all black h*es better tighten up. […] Y’all doing all that extra sh*t for nothing. You not achieving nothing, bi**h. You get y’all a** done, your titties done, y’all paying $150 to get your makeup done just to go to a local club, bi**h. Tighten up, h*e. These Spanish and these white h*es getting very spiffy on y’all. They f**k around and learn how to fry chicken you h*es is useless.”
