Trump's legal team approached the nation's highest court on Wednesday after New York courts declined to delay the sentencing by Judge Juan M. Merchan, who oversaw Trump's trial and conviction in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The request adds another layer of legal and political tension as Trump prepares to assume the presidency.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
