Trump Set For Second Term: How Much Do You Remember About His First?

2 months ago 2

Donald Trump has won the 2024 presidential election after surpassing the 270 Electoral College votes needed to claim the keys to the White House, beating out his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris for the top job.

Trump is the second former president to return to the Oval Office four years after an electoral defeat, in what many have described as an astonishing political comeback for a now convicted felon who refused to concede his loss in 2020.

For his second term in office, the president-elect has pledged to launch the "largest deportation program in history" and impose a flat 10-20 percent tariff on countries that "have been ripping us off." Trump has also vowed to "seal" the U.S. border and reinstate a travel ban that he imposed on certain, predominantly Muslim, countries during his first administration. Gaza refugees would be included in this, he said. And the Republican has suggested Ukraine will have to make concessions as part of a new peace agreement with Russia, which invaded the eastern European country in early 2022.

A Brief History of Donald Trump's First Term as President

During his first term, Trump made significant marks on both the domestic and international stage, characterized by achievements and controversies alike.

Trump's administration was defined by major tax reforms, including the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which lowered the corporate tax rate and aimed to stimulate economic growth. The pre-pandemic economy saw robust job creation and low unemployment rates. His "America First" approach redefined U.S. foreign policy, leading to significant trade renegotiations, such as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Additionally, his administration oversaw substantial deregulation efforts aimed at reducing government oversight on businesses.

Controversies abounded during his tenure, notably including the divisive "zero tolerance" immigration policy that resulted in family separations at the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump was impeached twice by the House of Representatives: first in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to Ukraine, and again in 2021 for incitement of insurrection following the January 6 Capitol riot.

His tenure's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic drew mixed reactions, from the rapid vaccine development through Operation Warp Speed to critiques over the administration's crisis communication and coordination. These elements created a turbulent backdrop that both mobilized supporters and deepened national divisions.
