A deadly shooting at Tuskegee University during the institution’s 100th homecoming celebration resulted in the arrest of one person and the death of another. The school’s website confirmed that the shooting occurred on campus early Sunday morning (Nov. 10) in Tuskegee, AL.
According to WSFA 12, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) took Jaquez Myrick, 25, into custody after he was found in possession of a handgun with a machine gun conversion device while leaving the scene of the crime. He is charged federally with possession of a machine gun. The Macon County Sheriff, André Brunson, does not believe Myrick is the only alleged triggerman. He is also not yet charged with firing shots or causing the death or injuries to those on campus.
“If you‘ve seen some of the videos, there was shooting all over the place. So, I think there will be multiple suspects,” Brunson explained to the news outlet. “We’re going to deal with it and try to get every last one of them.”
Latavion Johnson, 18, was confirmed as the deceased victim. Johnson was not a student at TU. An additional 16 people suffered injuries, 12 from bullets and four with non-gunfire related injuries. The university canceled Monday and Tuesday classes for mental health days and will provide in-person and virtual grief counselors for students, faculty, and staff.
“Our gathering is shadowed by a heartbreaking event,” relayed Student Government Association President Amare’ Hardee during a Sunday morning convocation service, per AL.com.

“We experienced a tragedy that has left us all shaken. This senseless act of violence has touched each of us, whether directly or indirectly. We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families, and we stand united in our commitment to supporting each and every one of us.”
“We will get through this together,” added Norma B. Clayton, Chair of the Tuskegee University Board of Trustees.
Alongside ALEA, the Tuskegee University Police Department, Tuskegee Police Department, Macon County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation — Mobile Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Fifth Judicial Circuit and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office are all joining the investigation.
