Mary Cosby is amping up the vulnerability this season as she appears on RHOSLC. The Bravo star lets the cameras in on a super emotional moment with her son, Robert Cosby Jr. Speaking on the RHOSLC AfterShow, and in separate interviews, she’s also explaining how her husband’s past is playing a vital role in helping connect with their son.

The Real Housewives Of Salt Lake City star had people in tears as a scene plays out between herself and her 21-year-old son, Robert Jr. He explains how he began abusing substances at the age of 16 and hadn’t stopped. Mom and son both cried during the conversation as Robert Jr adds how he contemplated ending his own life, but the only reason he didn’t was because of Mary.

Mary reveals husband’s past of ‘getting high’

Mary finding out her son had a substance abuse issue was “really hard” as she explained, “as it would be for anyone.”

She said: “It was “almost embarrassing,” on the RHOSLC AfterShow.

“At some point, your child has to tell you ‘Mom, I hit a vulnerable side and I failed… now I get high… I do drugs…”, she explains.

Mary continues: “I just feel like, if you keep things real, that’s how you get through it. Robert Sr, he tries to share with Robert Jr his situation.”

The RHOSLC star explains how “before his mom made him go to the army,” Robert Sr “enjoyed getting high.”

Mary adds how she doesn’t have the same experience to share with her son. She says: “I can’t see through those lenses but I do understand him and i don’t judge him. I hope it’ll help someone to bring their families together.”

Speaking to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live this December, Mary said she “wasn’t nervous” to speak to Robert Sr about their son’s issues.

She said: “I needed him. Because he’s experienced drugs when he was younger, so he would be able to guide Robert.”

Mary felt she ‘didn’t protect’ Robert Jr

Despite showing her support for her son on RHOSLC, Mary admits in the AfterShow, she felt she let Robert Jr down.

“That’s the whole thing of having children, you want to be able to protect them and I just felt like I couldn’t and I didn’t,” she tells co-star Angie Katsanevas.

Robert Jr explains to his mom in the scene how he feels like life “lacks seasoning” but by using the substances he was opting for, it felt like “adding seasoning to it.”

Mary’s son opened up to her and people were taking to social media in full force to say what a great mom she is.

“You want your kids to like be able to talk to you and come to you and you also want to give them the tools to be able to say no,” she says.

The RHOSLC star adds: “I feel like he was vulnerable at that time and the fact that he could say ‘You know what mom, this is how it got here’, I thought that was progress.

“He hit rock bottom and he’s ready to change and I support him 100 per cent.”

Speaking to Andy on WWHL, Mary provided a positive update this winter:

“Robert Jr is doing so good. I’m so proud of him. He did go to rehab. He stayed for one month. He completed it. He did an excellent job. He came out a new person.”
