Washington, D.C., Snow Sparks Warning of 'Hazardous' Drives Home From Work

3 hours ago 2

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for Washington, D.C., pointing to potentially "hazardous" commuting conditions because of expected snow accumulation on area roads.

The forecast for Thursday predicts scattered snow showers after 10 a.m., with a high near 36 degrees F and a 30 percent chance of precipitation. The evening is expected to be mostly cloudy, with gradual clearing and a low of around 26 degrees.

Why It Matters

The NWS advises that up to half an inch of snow could accumulate on area roads, potentially creating hazardous driving conditions. Commuters are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and exercise caution during the evening commute.

With temperatures well below the seasonal average, untreated roads and bridges are at risk of icing over, increasing the likelihood of traffic delays and accidents.

What To Know

Thursday's average temperature in the city is forecast to be 27 degrees, significantly colder than the five-year historical average of 37.1 for January 16 and marking a deviation of -10.1 degrees, or -27.22 percent.

This is the second-lowest deviation in the past five years, with 2024 having the coldest temperature, 26 degrees, a -29.92 percent deviation.

The NWS cautions that even minimal snow accumulation can lead to slippery roads in Washington, posing potential risks during the evening commute.

Several other states across the U.S. are also facing colder temperatures amid an Arctic blast. The NWS has winter weather warnings in parts of Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, West Virginia, Ohio, New York and California. Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are facing a cold weather advisory from the NWS.

What People Are Saying

The NWS office in Baltimore/Washington, D.C., said in Thursday's winter storm warning: "Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, with localized amounts up to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph, especially on the ridges."

The NWS continued: "Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact this morning and evening commutes."

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the office said: "Snow is expected today in the Alleghenies, where Winter Storm Warnings are in effect. Snow showers may spread east of the mountains as well, potentially leading to light accumulations."

In another social media post, the office said: "Confidence is increasing for the potential of accumulating snow Sunday across the area. If this threat materializes, it may cause travel disruptions."
