Count Trevor Story among those who would love to see Nolan Arenado in a Boston Red Sox uniform.
The Arenado-Red Sox rumors picked up steam early this week, with multiple reports indicating Boston is the preferred trade destination for the St. Louis Cardinals star. And Story, who played with Arenado while with the Colorado Rockies, would welcome reuniting with his former teammate.
"Obviously, that seems like a cool idea and we would love that," Story told NESN.com's Greg Dudek on Tuesday. "I think he would thrive in Boston just given his intensity, his love for the game, his passion for the game. He's a superstar, man.
"I don't think we're turning down anybody that wants to play in Boston and wants to do it. Obviously a cool idea, but a lot of things need to happen for that."
Story revealed he'd spoken with Arenado about potentially joining the Red Sox but didn't provide specifics.
"Nolan is one of my best friends and obviously when you hear that type of speculation, you can get excited about it a little bit," Story told Dudek. "I just know the type of player that he is, the intensity that that he brings, just the work ethic that he can provide from a leadership standpoint, too. He's one of the guys that I learned from."
The Red Sox have been connected to Arenado and free agent third baseman Alex Bregman throughout the offseason. Boston, which is searching for a righthanded bat to balance its lineup, could move Rafael Devers to first base if it acquired either Arenado or Bregman.
Still one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball, Arenado hit .272 with 16 homers in 152 games last season for the Cardinals.
