In 2023, the Texas Rangers triumphed through the postseason and went home with the World Series championship. They were at the top of the league and the top of their games.
A year later, the Rangers missed the postseason and looked like a shell of their former selves. Now, they're staring down the potential of entering a rebuild that sets them back a few years.
Nobody wants to rebuild, though, including the Rangers. They would much rather be aggressive in free agency and the trade market to improve their current roster than tear it down and restart.
The Athletic's Jim Bowden weighed in on what he believes the Rangers will do to avoid an eventual roster blowup and rebuild.
"The Rangers want to improve their starting pitching via free agency and/or trades and plan to add multiple relievers. They're also looking for a left-handed hitter to better balance their lineup," Bowden wrote. "General manager Chris Young and manager Bruce Bochy are obsessed with getting back to the World Series and Texas will be aggressive this winter in pursuit of that goal."
Bowden lists starting pitching, relief pitching, and a left-handed hitter as the team's biggest needs.
If the Rangers get aggressive in the trade market, the St. Louis Cardinals have been rumored to be shopping pitchers Sonny Gray and Ryan Helsley. The Chicago White Sox are actively trying to move their ace Garrett Crochet and their star outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
There's no shortage of talent available on the trade block.
Free agency would cause the Rangers to open their checkbook to acquire talent, but if the front office wants to avoid a rebuild, they will have to acquire some talent from free agency.
