Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, native Abe Schmucker first gained fame when he was 22 years old on TLC’s reality TV series Breaking Amish, which premiered in 2012. The show — which followed five young Anabaptist adults as they moved to New York City to experience a different life and decide whether or not they wanted to return to their communities — brought Abe and wife Rebecca Schmucker back for season 2 in 2013. The couple then appeared on the spinoff series, Return to Amish, in 2014, before later announcing their departure from reality TV in 2017. Since then, Abe has led a quiet life, leading many fans to wonder what he’s up to today.

Why Did Abe and Rebecca Schmucker Leave ‘Return to Amish’?

Abe and Rebecca starred on Return to Amish, which saw the original cast members return to their hometowns and struggle to assimilate, for the first four seasons. However, the couple decided to step away from reality TV in 2017 and announced their exit online.

“Announcement! We made the decision to no longer participate in Return to Amish,” Rebecca wrote on Twitter at the time. “It’s been a long road to come to this decision as a family and to move on to things that make us happy and [bring] us closer to where we want to be. We are living our best life!! P.S. I got my GED!!”

Where Is ‘Breaking Amish’ Star Abe Schmucker Now?

Abe does not have any social media, so he’s led a fairly private life since his exit from Return to Amish. However, he and Rebecca are still living with their family in Pennsylvania, as seen on Rebecca’s Instagram page. Abe occasionally makes appearances in photos shared on her account.

The TLC alum has been working as a truck driver since he left Return to Amish, according to multiple reports.

One life update that fans have received from Rebecca is not about Abe, but about his mom, Mary Schmucker, who also appeared on Breaking Amish and Return to Amish. Rebecca took to Instagram on November 13, 2024, to ask fans for prayers amid Mary’s colon cancer battle, which was first revealed in 2022.

“I’m making a prayer request for mom. She’s not feeling good the last few weeks and can’t keep anything down and she’s having trouble eating,” Rebecca wrote. “She is on hospice now. Her pain has been so bad and they are helping with that. If you could, flood her with positive messages and pray for her to be comfortable and pain free. Thank you!”

Are ‘Breaking Amish’ Stars Abe and Rebecca Schmucker Still Together?

Abe and Rebecca tied the knot in the season 1 finale of Breaking Amish, and they’ve been going strong ever since. Rebecca marked their 12th wedding anniversary on Instagram on September 24, 2024, sharing a compilation video of their photos together set to Seph Schlueter’s “Counting My Blessings.”

“Happy 12th anniversary babe! I’m so grateful for you,” she wrote.

The couple share daughter Malika, whom they welcomed in 2014, and Kayla, who is Rebecca’s older daughter from a previous relationship.

During the Breaking Amish season 1 reunion, Rebecca shut down rumors that she and Abe were married before the show began filming.

“[Fans] can believe whatever they want, but if they want to know, they can watch the show. If they don’t want to believe, they don’t have to believe it,” she said. “That’s my opinion. I don’t give a s–t what anybody thinks. People have to discuss our lives so much that we can’t even have our own life anymore. They’re making us out to be somebody I don’t even know.”
