Singer and actor Jamie Foxx suffered a “medical complication” on April 11, 2023. While little information was provided at the time, the Dreamgirls star has personally kept fans updated on his health and finally shared the specifics of what happened in his December 2024 Netflix special.

What Happened to Jamie Foxx?

The “Blame It” artist’s eldest daughter took to social media in April 2023 to alert her father’s fans of a medical emergency he had suffered.

“We wanted to share that my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday,” Corinne Foxx wrote via Instagram on April 12. “Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery. We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers.”

After not sharing the specifics of what happened for nearly two years, Jamie finally revealed that he suffered a brain bleed and stroke. In his Netflix comedy special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was, which premiered on December 10, 2024, Jamie opened up about his health scare in detail for the first time.

“We still don’t know what happened to me,” the rapper explained, adding that his symptoms started with a headache and that he “went out” before he could get aspirin. “I don’t remember 20 days,” he continued. “What they told me was they took me to the first doctor and that first doctor gave me a cortisone shot and sent me home. What the f–k is that? I don’t know if you can do Yelps for doctors, but that’s half a star.”

It was Jamie’s sister Deidra Dixon who said the actor needed to get a second opinion at the hospital. It was there that a doctor informed Deidra that Jamie had a “brain bleed that’s led to a stroke,” he revealed. “[The doctor] said, if I don’t go into his head right now, we’re gonna lose him.’”

As Jamie recovered, his “vitals were so bad” that doctors thought he wouldn’t make it. He credits his teenage daughter, Anelise, with being the “miracle” to help his recovery. “I didn’t want her to see me like that,” he admitted. “She snuck into my hospital room with her guitar and she says, ‘I know what my daddy needs.’”

Prior to Jamie’s Netflix special, details about his condition and the nature of his “complication” were vague. The Texas native’s famous friends periodically kept fans informed of his recovery in the aftermath of the stroke.

During his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on April 20, 2023, comedian Martin Lawrence told Extra that his longtime pal was “doing better.” “My prayers go out for him every night and just wishing the best for him, one of the best that we got in Hollywood,” he said. “Not only one of the best entertainers but a good person.”

Three days later, Nick Cannon – who temporarily stepped in to host Foxx’s musical game show, Beat Shazam – claimed to be given Foxx’s “blessing” to share an update. “I can’t really say what it is, but it’ll be out there soon,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “He’s awake. They say he’s alert, so we love it. That’s family right there.”

Tiffany Haddish told the outlet later that week that her friend was “doing well.” “We have a lot of mutual friends that are keeping me updated,” she said. “I’ve been praying really hard for him. I love that man a lot. That’s my big bro.”

Three weeks after his medical emergency, a message was shared via Foxx’s Instagram on May 3, 2023, which read, “Appreciate all the love!!! Feeling blessed.”

How Is Jamie Foxx Doing Today?

Jamie is now fully recovered, but it took some time.

The Horrible Bosses star’s eldest daughter – whom he shares with ex Connie Kline – took to social media to shut down reports that her family was “preparing for the worst.” “Update from the family,” the 29-year-old shared via Instagram on May 12, 2023. “Sad to see how the media runs wild. My Dad has been out of the hospital for weeks, recuperating.”

She went on to say that the Academy Award winner was “playing pickleball yesterday.” “Thanks for everyone’s prayers and support,” she added. “We have an exciting work announcement coming next week too!”

Representatives for Jamie Foxx directed In Touch to Corinne’s post for the latest update about her father’s health.

Days later, Jamie and Corrine announced their new business venture as hosts for the music-based show We Are Family. “We are thrilled to be developing ‘We Are Family’ with Jeff Apploff and our friends at FOX Entertainment after so much success with six seasons of Beat Shazam. We hope this show brings as much fun to audiences at home as we’ve had creating it when it premieres next year,” the pair announced in a statement on May 15, 2023.

Four months after the medical emergency, the “Fall For Your Type” singer returned to Twitter. “Boat life,” he wrote on July 9, 2023. “Celebrating summer with @brownsugarbbn. Stay blessed.” Around the same time, TMZ shared footage of the actor waving aboard a boat traveling along the Chicago River.

Jamie Foxx Breaks Silence, Shares Update on His Health Scare

Jamie broke his silence on July 22, 2023, admitting his health scare was something he thought he “would never ever go through.” He also explained why he and his loved ones have been keeping the details of his condition under wraps.

“I want you to see me laughing, having a good time, partying, cracking a joke, doing a movie [or] television show,” he said in an Instagram video at the time. “I didn’t want you to see me with tubes running out of me and trying to figure out if I was going to make it through.”

A few weeks later, a source exclusively told In Touch that Jamie kept the details of his hospitalization private to protect his image. “He always wants to show everyone in the business that he’s just fine,” the insider explained. “And that he’s not damaged goods by any stretch.”

The They Cloned Tyrone star shared how “thankful” he was after she was “finally starting to feel like” himself again via Instagram on August 16, 2023. “I’m thankful to everyone that reached out and sent well wishes and prayers … I have a lot of people to thank … u just don’t know how much it meant,” he wrote. “I will be thanking all of you personally … and if you didn’t know … GOD IS GOOD … all day every day.”

“God is good … As I post these pictures, my heart and my soul is filled with nothing but pure joy,” he shared photos of the Atlanta event via Instagram. “On October 3 fourth and fifth I had an opportunity to tell my side of the story and there was no better place than Atlanta Georgia.”

The entertainer declined to categorize the event as a “standup comedy show” and instead called it an “artistic explanation.” “I have to thank you Atlanta you showed up and you showed out, I haven’t been on stage in 18 years but I needed the stage and I needed an audience that was made up of nothing but pure love and that’s what you were,” he continued. “Of some thing that went terribly wrong, but thanks to the great people in Atlanta especially piedmont hospital you enabled me to come back and be on stage and do what I love to do the most …”

The Valentine’s Day actor first announced his one-man show in September 2024, telling fans that he would be opening up about his health scare. In July 2024, Jamie gave more details about his mystery illness on X, revealing it began with a “bad headache.”

“I was gone for 20 days,” he wrote. “I don’t remember anything.”
