JonBenet Ramsey’s mother was a key figure in the investigation into her daughter’s tragic end because she was inside the home at the time.

The 1996 crime, which dominated headlines at the time, is revisited in a new Netflix documentary. That has some fans wondering about the fate of the child beauty queen’s mom, Patsy Ramsey. JonBenet was discovered strangled to death in the basement of the family’s home. In the house were Patsy, her husband John Ramsey, and JonBenet’s brother, Burke.

JonBenet’s mom died on June 24, 2006, at the age of 49, according to FindaGrave.

The cause of death was ovarian cancer, The New York Times reported.

According to FindaGrave, Ramsey is buried at Saint James Episcopal Cemetery and Cremation Gardens in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. Pictures of her grave on the site show it festooned with flowers.

Patsy and John Ramsey were together until the end.

According to The Oklahoman, Ramsey “was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1993 and suffered a recurrence several years ago,” her attorney L. Lin Wood said when she died.

The Oklahoman reported that Patsy “died at her father’s home in suburban Atlanta with her husband, John, at her bedside.”

“Hopefully her legacy will not be tied to the false accusation related to the brutal murder of her daughter,” Wood said, according to The Oklahoman, declaring that her death was not unexpected since she had previously been diagnosed with cancer.

According to Deseret, Patsy Ramsey had been free of cancer for 8.5 years when the disease returned in 2002.

The reoccurrence of the cancer was discovered in an annual exam, the site reported.

Patsy Ramsey had been living under a shadow of suspicion, along with her husband, ever since JonBenet was discovered murdered in the family’s home. According to Deseret, the parents always denied wrongdoing and said that an intruder strangled their daughter.

A later district attorney named Mary Lacy publicly exonerated the child’s parents, however, according to ABC News, which reported that Lacy believed an intruder sat outside JonBenet’s bedroom and waited to murder her when the parents and child’s brother had fallen asleep.

“Here’s what I was doing with the exoneration letter,” Lacy explained to ABC News of why she exonerated Patsy and John Ramsey, who were once considered persons of interest in the case. “I was trying to prevent a horrible travesty of justice. I was scared to death that despite the fact that there was no evidence, no psychopathy, and no motive, the case was a train going down the track and the Ramseys were tied to that track.”
