Martin Luther King Jr. Day, or MLK Day, is a federal holiday dedicated to the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday is meant to fall around the Civil Rights icon's birthday, January 15th, but is observed on the third Monday in January. In 2025, MLK Day falls on January 20th.
As is the case with most federal holidays, several businesses will close to recognize the contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. MLK Day is also the only federal holiday also classified as a national day of service, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Here are a few places with operational hours that will be affected by MLK Day.
Is the DMV Open on MLK Day?
Since the DMV is considered a non-essential government entity, it recognizes MLK Day as a paid holiday and is closed.
People who need to visit the DMV will still be able to visit in the days immediately before and after MLK Day. Appointments made with your local DMV office will go forward as scheduled once the holiday passes.
Are Schools Closed on MLK Day?
Most schools, including public and private schools and universities, will be closed on MLK Day. Some colleges and universities may host community service activities or other programming dedicated to the memory of Dr. King. Volunteer opportunities are also emphasized on this day due to its nature as a national day of service.
Are Banks Open on MLK Day?
Most major banks, like Wells Fargo and TD Bank, will not be open on MLK Day. Digital banking opportunities should remain available, but some transactions may not go through until after the holiday.
Are Libraries Open on MLK Day?
Public libraries will be closed on MLK Day. Local bookstores may also close to observe the holiday, but you may need to check your local business hours.
What Is Open on MLK Day?
People hoping for a meal out or a trip to the grocery store will likely be able to meet their needs on this federal holiday. Most standard restaurants, grocery stores, fast food chains and retail stores will remain open on MLK Day.
While the United States Postal Service will not run on MLK Day, some other delivery services may continue to operate on a limited basis.
