Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Dick Van Dyke famously played family man Rob Petrie on television, and it turns out the nonagenarian is just as devoted a dad to his four children in real life.

The iconic actor has four children over the age of 60 with his late ex-wife, Margie Willett — sons Christian and Barry, and daughters Stacy and Carrie Beth. "They all turned out great, I'm happy to say," Dick told USA Today. "Not a horse thief in the bunch."

In December 2024, Dick got to show off his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in a new video for Coldplay's single, "All My Love." And in 2023, he took to Instagram to proudly share how he cherished his family. "I never realized when I was first having kids what I was starting," he wrote. "But, I'm amazed and grateful to have lived long enough to spend Father's Day with some of my kids, grandchildren AND great grandchildren!! All wonderful, non-toxic people!!"

So just who are the sons and daughters of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star? Here's everything to know about Christian, Barry, Stacy and Carrie Beth.

Christian Van Dyke

Dick Van Dyke welcomed his eldest son, Christian, into the world in May 1950. Though Christian made his acting debut as Frankie on The Dick Van Dyke Show in January 1962, he opted not to pursue a career in showbiz. Instead, he attended Occidental College in Los Angeles before studying law at Arizona State University.

Christian eventually settled in Oregon, where he worked in both public and private practice, including serving as corporate counsel for Nike, before transitioning into a career in marketing.

Christian, who was living in Bend, Oregon, experienced the loss of his daughter Jessica to complications from Reye's syndrome when she was 13. He reportedly later became the father to a son and another daughter.

Barry Van Dyke

Barry Van Dyke, born in July 1951, has fond memories of growing up in California with his famous father. "He was Rob Petrie at home," Barry once said of his dad's role on The Dick Van Dyke Show. "That's really him. He always played himself. Fans of his feel like they know him because that's the real Dick Van Dyke you see on the screen."

Like his brother Christian, Barry appeared in episodes of the comedy during its nearly five-year run in the 1960s — but he wasn't at risk of becoming a spoiled child star. "We were aware [Dad] was on TV and watched the show and knew it was successful, but we didn't socialize with a lot of show-business types," he told the L.A. Times.

Barry later pursued an acting career of his own, landing smaller roles before starring alongside his dad as Detective Steve Sloan on the CBS program Diagnosis: Murder. "Barry's teenage sons were on, and I had my daughter Stacy on the show, too. That's carrying nepotism to its ultimate!" Dick once joked.

Barry married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Carey, in 1974, and the couple have four children together — sons Carey, Shane, and Wes, and daughter Taryn. Dick has described his second boy as an "incredible" and "devoted" father, noting that he's "much better than I was."

Today, Barry is also a proud grandfather to several grandchildren.

Stacy Van Dyke

Born in 1955, Stacy Van Dyke had a passion for acting from a young age. "I've watched Stacy perform in school plays for years," Dick said early on in his daughter's career.

Stacy later appeared in episodes of The New Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis: Murder, with her final known role in the CBS series in 2002. Despite her dad's fame, she has largely lived her life out of the limelight over the decades. She reportedly married Barry Breen in 1979, but little else is known about her personal life.

Carrie Beth Van Dyke

Carrie Beth Van Dyke, the youngest of Dick's four children, was born in October 1961. Like her older sister Stacy, she has kept a low profile, though she appeared in 19 episodes of her dad's show, Diagnosis: Murder. Carrie Beth and her husband, Kevin McNally, who she married in 1983, reportedly live in Los Angeles and are the parents of two children.
