Though Joaquim studied criminology at Barry University, the Brazil native’s true passion seems to be the martial art known as jiu-jitsu. He and his two brothers, Pedro and Gui, learned jiu-jitsu from “legendary grandmaster Hélio Gracie” starting at age two, according to the Valente brothers’ website. He’s also trained in boxing and jūdō.

Joaquim earned his black belt and Professors’ Diploma from Grandmaster Hélio Gracie in 2007. He was one of only 27 people to receive the diploma from the Grandmaster in 75 years.

Joaquim, Pedro and Gui currently teach jiu-jitsu classes to students of all levels and ages at the Miami-based Valente Brothers facility.
