The new Netflix series A Man on the Inside tells a tale based around real events and viewers are likely curious about the actual person whose actions inspired the show and what happened to them.
The character played by Ted Danson, named Charles, draws inspiration from a real-life widower named Sergio Chamy, from Chile, who indeed went undercover in a care home.
Sergio's objective during his time there was to identify any signs of elder abuse over three months, blending in with fellow residents.
As depicted by Danson's portrayal, Sergio responded to a newspaper advert looking for an old man, between his 70s or 80s, who was savvy with tech. Demonstrating his skills just like in the first episode of the Netflix series and the documentary The Mole Agent, Sergio snapped a photo of his interviewer to prove his capabilities.
Following the journey similar to what is shown in the documentary, which inspired the Netflix series, Sergio ultimately returned to his normal life with his family after completing his assignment prompting the question: Where is he now?
Post-documentary life brought fame to Sergio in Chile, leading to invitations from numerous award ceremonies as the documentary The Mole Agent gained recognition, reports the Mirror.
With The Mole Agent securing an Oscar nomination, director Maite Alberdi mentioned plans to escort Sergio to the event. Speaking to Forbes, she said: "He's (Sergio) my date for the Oscars ceremony. He told me it would be the last great adventure of his life, and the first time he would get on a plane. So... it's never too late for anything."
Following the documentary, Sergio ventured into acting, landing a role in the Spanish-language film Perra Vida, currently available on Amazon Prime. The movie tells the story of a lawyer who takes care of a dog she accidentally injured, and when the owner appears, she proposes continuing to care for the pet if they pretend to be in a relationship. Sergio portrays the character Eliseo.
After the documentary's release, Sergio created an Instagram account, where he shares updates on his adventures and newfound fame.
In December last year, he expressed gratitude for messages celebrating his 90th birthday, saying: "I want to thank each and everyone of you for your messages and displays of love for my 90th birthday (Still can't believe this profile change)."
"It has been days of lots of excitement and happiness. I am very grateful for life and all those who day by day continue to count on me. A very big hug and thank you".
Sergio has also participated in Teleton, a Chilean charity campaign held annually to raise funds for children with disabilities.
His most recent Instagram post, made in September, marked Chilean Independence Day, with a translated message reading: "Friends, I hope you continue to have nice Patrias Holidays."
"I'm settled watching the military stop, brings back so many memories of my childhood. Because at that time it was heard on the radio and it was a family event and since it is on TV, I try to always watch it. A hug and to celebrate our Chilito! ".
