“On Thanksgiving night I got into a scooter accident, the bike lane I was riding in was suddenly blocked with cones and I was forced to choose between a van and a pylon,” he explained on Monday.
“The pylons hurt!! Have a terrible scrape on my arm and I was pretty convinced I had broken my arm.
“The next morning it was a whole lot better so I didn’t worry as much.”
The actor, who rose to fame playing Jonathan Bowler in Who’s The Boss from 1984 to 1992 opposite Alyssa Milano, went on to explain that by Saturday he was experiencing “weird chest pains” that felt “like my hiatal hernia was acting up”.
The pain was so severe across his chest, stomach and shoulder muscles the actor said he “could barely breathe”.
“It was the worst moment of my life,” Pintauro wrote.
“Wil drove me to the hospital and after all kinds of tests, a CAT scan, an x-ray, and bloodwork, they discovered that I had an infection in my bloodstream due to a tear in my stomach lining — air and stomach acid etc were escaping into my abdomen.
“It’s been the most excruciating pain I’ve ever felt in my whole life.”
The actor underwent “emergency surgery” to repair the tear, which he said was successful.
“Now that it’s fixed, the pain is pretty much gone away, although I’m very sore,” he added.
“They just took the intubation tube out, but I have to leave another tube in my stomach for three days to keep removing the acids so as to not upset the stitches and repair they did.
“Which also means that I won’t be eating or drinking anything for the next three days. they always say this but it’s very true, if I had waited any longer, I could have died.
“My body was the one who told me something was absolutely wrong.”
He went on to praise his “wonderful husband Wil drove me here and has been by my side for the whole thing” and also gave a shoutout to the “wonderful” medical team at Memorial Care Miller Hospital in California.
“The surgeon was so friendly and I had so much confidence in him.
“So keep me in your prayers for the next few days that the repair sticks and that I can get out of here soon.”
He said it was his first “major surgery” and he found the experience “absolutely terrifying”.
“They did an X-ray of my arm and it’s not broken! So there’s one bright side,” his post ended.
After Who’s The Boss wrapped in 1992, Pintauro went on to act in stage productions before taking a break from acting and working as a sales representative and restaurant manager.
In 2013 he announced his engagement to Wil Tabares and they wed a year later.
