Wicked has achieved this ground-breaking record within six weeks of release

The stage-to-screen adaptation of Wicked has added another impressive achievement to its list after smashing box office records last month.

The film has now officially become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history, surpassing Mamma Mia, which held the title since its release in 2008.

Mamma Mia raked in $611 million worldwide at the end of its box office run, but Wicked has now surpassed that with a staggering $634 million worldwide, just six weeks after its release.

This is undoubtedly great news for Universal Pictures, especially as a sequel, Wicked: For Good, is set to be released in November 2025.

The film was a hit from its opening weekend alone, bringing in $162.5 million and making it a profitable venture, given its budget of $150 million, reports the Mirror.

It broke several records that weekend, including becoming the biggest global and domestic opening for a movie based on a Broadway show, beating the worldwide opening for 2012's Les Miserables, which made $103 million.

Star Ariana Grande also achieved her own milestone as the film scored the biggest domestic opening for a pop star, beating Lady Gaga's A Star is Born at $42.5 million, Harry Styles' Don't Worry Darling at $19.3 million and Britney Spears' Crossroads at $14.5 million.

It was also the biggest opening weekends for Cynthia Erivo, director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, surpassing all of their previous films.

Ariana takes on the role of Galinda Upland, who later becomes Glinda the Good, while Cynthia portrays Elphaba Thropp, who eventually transforms into the Wicked Witch of the West.

In addition to the leading duo, the film boasts a star-studded cast, including Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Ethan Slater.

The film is the first instalment of a two-part adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which is loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire.

Not only has the movie been a box office hit, but it has also received a wealth of critical acclaim, particularly for its performances and production design.

The film currently holds an impressive 8.0 rating on IMDb from 78,000 votes and an 88% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 283 reviews.

Wicked is in cinemas now. Wicked: For Good is scheduled for release on November 21 2025
