The tune landed just in time for Election Day.
Will.i.am dropped a powerful new track, “Yes She Can,” just in time for Election Day (Nov. 5).
The Black Eyed Peas frontman amped up the energy on Sunday (Nov. 3) with an anthem that’s part celebration and part outcry—endorsing Kamala Harris for President.
The song kicks off with lines that cut deep: “Mama, what’s wrong with America?/ Why can’t we get along in America?/ Something’s going on in America/ People entertained by the predator.” Will.i.am’s raw lyrics speak to the division that has been seen across the nation—even highlighting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Despite the chaos that politics has brought about over the years, the Grammy-winner also called for change. “We all immigrants different characters but together, you know, we could break down the barriers/ So register and vote for your life,” he raps.
“Do it for your daughters and your sons and your wife/ If you a woman then vote for your rights, and don’t let them take away your right/ We could be better than we ever been/ We about to have a woman president.”
The visual accompanying the song shows scenes of people casting their votes, the iconic Statue of Liberty, a young girl proudly waving the American flag, and protestors outside the Capitol with signs that say phrases like: “Bans off our bodies.”
Will.i.am captioned the video on Instagram with a message: “This is a heartfelt anthem celebrating Kamala Harris and the power of [everyday] people… With Election Day just around the corner, I wanted to score the movement, and create a call to action, and a promise of what we can achieve together… Join me as we shine a spotlight not only on the journey of Kamala Harris and the change that’s coming, but also on the everyday heroes and #PowerfulWoman who breathe life into the world.”
He also dedicated the track to all women everywhere: “mothers, single mothers, step mothers, sisters, aunts, neices, wives, bestfriends, fearless warriors, queens, princesses, presidents, CEO’s, doctors, nurses, coders, scientists, astronauts, researchers, preachers, care takers, law makers, nurturers, teachers, tutors, professors, entrepreneurs, bosses and the doorway to LIFE that women are.”
“Yes She Can” is being considered a sequel to his 2008 endorsement song “Yes We Can,” which helped gather support for Barack Obama. With his new anthem, Will.i.am is, once again, showing how music has the power to move the needle—not just on the charts, but in the voting booth, too.
