The National Weather Service (NWS) had 18 states under winter storm warning or winter weather advisory early Monday. Up to eight inches of snow was forecast for some parts of the country, with "treacherous" conditions expected at times.
Why It Matters
Adverse weather conditions risk serious disruptions for Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations as well as the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
What To Know
At the time of writing, there were winter storm warnings in place in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Winter weather advisories were in effect in Oklahoma, Kansas, Michigan and Alaska.
While expected snowfall varied from state to state, the NWS said that in portions of south central and southwest Maine and central, northern, and southern New Hampshire up to eight inches of snow accumulation was possible.
Winter storm warnings are issued when "a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent," while winter weather advisories are issued for "any amount of freezing rain, or when two to four inches of snow (alone or in combination with sleet and freezing rain), is expected to cause a significant inconvenience, but not serious enough to warrant a warning."
For parts of North Carolina, the NWS said that "given the exceptionally cold temperatures and the snow being so dry, very slippery and treacherous conditions on untreated roads are expected to result."
What People Are Saying
NWS Mobile said on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday: "Our confidence continues to increase in the area receiving SIGNIFICANT to MAJOR winter weather impacts.
"It looks like this will be a snow event for the majority of the area, however, we still cannot rule out a wintry mix along the immediate coastline."
NWS Houston said on X on Sunday: "Very cold temperatures expected tonight with all of Southeast Texas (except along the coast) falling below freezing with wind chills as low as 10-15°F. Northern areas will experience a hard freeze with low temperatures in the low 20s. Be sure to dress accordingly."
NWS Boston said on X, on Monday morning: "One final burst of snow was moving across central/eastern MA & northern RI very early this morning. The last of the steady snow should push off the coast by 5-6 am, but untreated roads will remain snow covered and slippery given temperatures well below freezing."
