Woman Moves Into Spare Bedroom at 12:34 a.m. To Avoid Cats, Plan Fails

3 hours ago 2

A TikTok video of a woman's struggle to get a good night's sleep has racked up over 313,000 views in 24 hours.

The home-security camera footage, shared on February 5, shows Sophie Scott (@sophiescott_99) getting into an empty double bed located in her spare bedroom at 12:34 a.m. The text layered over explains why. It says, "the cats are giving me NO space in our bed," adding that her husband wasn't disturbed.

One minute later, a furry face can be seen poking his head around the door, accompanied by the text saying, "hello mother," then Oscar hops onto the bottom of the bed. Two minutes later, a kitten joins them and makes herself comfortable by getting underneath the quilt. The 24-year-old owner wrote: "back to rearranging my skeleton to fit around the babies."

Newsweek reached out to @sophiescott_99 for comment via TikTok. We could not verify the details of the case.

Newsweek previously spoke with Dr. Amber Carter, doctor of veterinary medicine, member of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, and owner of Cat Care Clinic in Ormond Beach, Florida.

"Allowing your cat in your bedroom can increase the bond you have with your cat," Carter said, "especially if you work out of the home all day. Allowing your cat into your room reduces the amount of restrictions your cat thinks you are putting on them, and making time to lie down and spend relaxation time with your cat will increase trust."

Adults between the ages of 18 and 64 should aim for seven to nine hours of nightly sleep, according to the Sleep Foundation. But this can be affected by having a furry friend in the bed, say studies.

In 2021, a group of researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden found a significant association between cat ownership and not reaching seven hours of sleep per night. This could be due to a feline's natural instincts to hunt at dusk and dawn kicking in.

"Not every cat and human are a good combination of sleeping partners," Carter said, "and there can be several factors that can affect your sleep, and therefore your health."

TikTok Reacts

As of now, the video has over 32,500 likes and many comments from other owners who can relate.

One posted: "I wake up every morning with back ache from sleeping like a prawn so my cats can sleep soundly on the bed." Scott responded: "I'm starting to wonder if maybe that's why I had to see a chiropractor a couple of years ago."

"I know, it's annoying from time to time. Just remind yourself that you are their whole world. They will be with you till their last breath," commented another, and Scott replied: "As much as I was in disbelief, I just showed them some love and settled back down again because I can only ever appreciate that they are still healthy and breathing … and won't ever leave me alone."

A third commenter wrote: "They were like 'mother, why are we moving rooms[?]'"
