A brother and sister have gone viral after she called him for help in tears when she got locked on a train that had parked up at the depot.
Kristopher Kirwan and his sister, Donna, live in Ireland, and a recent shopping trip in Dublin ended in disaster when she got on a train heading to the depot.
A video showing the moment Donna called him for help, and Kirwan's subsequent rescue of his sister after going to the depot in person to alert staff members, has spread like wildfire online.
Boasting almost 100,000 likes on his TikTok page @kristopherkirwan since being shared on November 6, it shows the pair on a video call, with Donna clearly calling for help inside the the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) train, where she is the only passenger and completely locked in, while Kirwan cannot stop laughing.
He then arrives at the Irish Rail depot, where he tells two staff members: "My sister is in here stuck on a train." Newsweek has contacted Irish Rail/ Iarnród Éireann and @kristopherkirwan for comment.
The video then switches to show Donna being walked out of the train to safety—with a staff member carrying her shopping bags for her.
Kirwan humorously captioned the video: "A day in the life."
TikTok users were in stitches, with one commenting they were "crying, especially when I seen her walk out with him carrying her shopping bags."
"The way she is tippy tapping behind him kinda melted my heart," another said. "She looks like a lil girl who got lost in a crowd and is suddenly seeing a familiar face!"
And another worried: "Knowing my luck if I was in this situation my phone would be dead."
Kirwan later shared an update video on his Instagram page, @kriskirwan, where he explained his sister had not fallen asleep on the train, as many had guessed.
"She got on the train and it was empty, she thought it was just quiet because of the time of night. She sat on the train, put her headphones on and looked at her phone. And before she knew it, she was parked at the train depot."
He added that they couldn't find a phone number for the depot, which is why he made the in-person rescue.
While train travel is hugely popular in Europe, it is far less common in the United States. Data from Statista shows that, since 1960, U.S. public transport passengers have traveled 22.1 billion miles via train.
Bus travel was far more popular, at 391.4 billion miles—but air travel within the United States remains the most popular way to get around, with 709 billion miles since 1960.
