Woman's Olympic-Inspired Costume of Breakdancer Raygun 'Wins Halloween'

1 month ago 3

Every Halloween, millions of people are faced with the decision of what to dress up as. While many might opt for the traditional costumes—vampires, aliens, and ghosts—one woman appears to have won Halloween already with her Olympic-inspired ensemble.

During a girls' weekend trip to Atlantic City last week, Stephanie DeMarr packed an extra special outfit just in case: her Halloween costume. She asked her sister, Susan DeSena if she'd like to see the costume, and of course, she said yes without hesitation.

DeSena, of Long Island, New York, knew her sister would choose something fun and quirky, but she couldn't quite believe it when DeMarr walked into the room dressed as the Australian Olympic breakdancer, Raygun. The costume consisted of a full Australian sweatsuit, complete with a baseball cap. DeSena told Newsweek that she "obviously loved it."

She said: "She wanted to show us her costume and asked us what we thought of it. I thought her dancing in particular was spot on."

Raygun, whose real name is Rachael Gunn, captured the world's attention during the 2024 Paris Olympics when breaking debuted at the Games. During her three battles, Raygun didn't receive a single point from the judges, losing each 18-0.

Despite not winning a medal, her unique performances turned her into a viral sensation. Her signature moves, including the kangaroo hop and sliding around the floor in a circle, left viewers speechless.

Indeed, Raygun's meme-worthy dancing has even turned her into a fun new Halloween idea for this year. DeMarr told Newsweek that she really enjoyed watching Raygun's performances over the summer, and she thought it "would be original" to recreate them for Halloween.

"I thought it was such a funny idea, and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the costume was," DeMarr said. "My impression was all in fun, just tried to remember the best moments. But honestly it took forever in the mail, and we all know how things look online and turn out different when the package comes."

Of course, simply showing the costume off wasn't enough for DeMarr, who also decided to put on a whole show. She recreated the Australian's dance moves and joked that she hopes she "brought the same energy" with her impersonation.

The Social Media Reaction

After witnessing her sister's impromptu performance, DeSena couldn't resist sharing the footage on TikTok (@susandesena). The video showing the moment when "Halloween came early" has left the internet in hysterics, leading to more than 3.8 million views and 257,700 likes on TikTok already.

DeSena certainly never expected it to generate so much attention. She's loved seeing so many positive responses to her sister's masterful imitation.

"I thought it was so funny, but even I was shocked to see the number of views and likes we got. During our weekend, we would look at it every once in a while, and joke that we were TikTok famous to our friends," DeSena told Newsweek.

That wasn't the only time DeMarr plans on showing off her costume this year, as she will also be wearing the iconic outfit to work on Halloween. Let's hope her workspace has plenty of room for her to start dancing.

With over 6,300 comments on the viral TikTok video so far, many people have lauded the hilarious costume and praised DeMarr's impersonation.

One comment reads: "I thought Raygun made an appearance at your house for a minute. It was spot on!"

Another person wrote: "Olympic level performance 10/10."

While another TikToker joked: "OK THIS WINS HALLOWEEN."
