As 2024 comes to a close, people online are rounding up some of their memories from the year—and one woman has chosen an interesting theme.
A TikTok video has gone viral after user Ty Nicole shared her top five worst text messages received from men over the past year, lending a candid look at the frustrations of modern dating. Since the video was posted on December 16, it has received over 997,000 views and over 80,000 likes.
"This is me sharing my top five favorite texts that I received from men this year," Nicole said in the video in front of a screenshot revealing number five.
In one instance, a man responded to an invitation to hang out with: "I don't think I have anything going on. So yeah."
This led Nicole to vow she would never accept such behavior again.
In another set of messages, another man told Nicole he missed her, only to follow up with an admission that he didn't actually miss her at all.
"This is kind of funny," she said of the encounter. "But like, I hate men."
One particularly brazen text involved a guy who had been viewing her stories but never replying to her texts, only to comment on her dinner plans and awkwardly ask when "his" dinner was happening.
In the comments, Nicole wrote that these were all messages with different men, "unfortunately."
People in the comments were quick to express shock at the disrespect and lack of enthusiasm displayed in some of the messages. Unfortunately, many of them could relate.
"Nothing drives me more insane than when you have plans, check if the plans are still happening and they act like it's never been discussed or agreed upon," one person wrote.
"I feel like you hit every terrible breed of male energy we should be avoiding in 2025," another user wrote.
Some skipped the shock and opted instead for words of wisdom.
"Girl, with all the love in my heart and for the love of god, stop putting the ball in their court," one commenter wrote.
"That's your first mistake, asking him if he still wants to hang out. Never," another wrote.
Nicole's video illuminates just one aspect of a larger frustration with modern dating. Whether it's subpar text messages from romantic interests, lack of depth and miscommunication on dating apps, or just plain overwhelm, her video inadvertently became a gathering place for women to share their dating gripes and strategies.
