After losing outfielder Juan Soto to the New York Mets, the New York Yankees made multiple acquisitions in hopes of returning to the World Series in 2025. But since Gleyber Torres bolted for the Detroit Tigers, there's still one more significant hole to fill in manager Aaron Boone's infield. Could the Bombers call up the Mets about utility player Jeff McNeil?
As it currently stands, the Yankees' infield includes first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, shortstop Anthony Volpe and third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Although he did a good job holding down the hot corner after landing in the Bronx last summer, Chisholm's more natural position is second base.
In an ideal world, general manager Brian Cashman could move Chisholm back to the right side of the infield and have someone else step in to play third base. FanSided's Jacob Mountz listed McNeil as one of four infielders the Bombers should consider pursuing.
"McNeil hit a respectable .279 with 10 home runs while on the road (in 2024)," Mountz wrote. "While hitting at home, he posted a lowly .199 with two home runs. It is clear, given his splits, that McNeil would greatly benefit from playing in a different environment. McNeil, known for his slap-hitting approach that typically results in a high batting average, might find an ideal home in the Bronx. At Yankee Stadium, his left-handed swing could produce home run totals above 20 annually, something he's only done once."
The 32-year-old is entering his third season of a four-year, $50 million deal. He'll earn $15.75 million in 2025 and 2026. McNeil's contract also includes a $15.75 million club option for 2027, per Spotrac.
While he struggled to a .238/.308/.384 line in 2024, the two-time All-Star and 2022 MLB batting champion showed signs of life before landing on the injured list. McNeil hit .216/.276/.314 in 323 plate appearances before the All-Star break. However, he slashed .289/.376/.547 through 149 plate appearances in the second half.
