18 Times Celebrities Called Out Photographers And Paparazzi

After Jennifer Garner had her first baby in 2005, up to 20 paparazzi would lie in wait at the end of her driveway, and for the next few years, they were always following her. She said, "You'd go through a yellow light, and 15, 20 cars would go through the red light behind you, driving up on the side of roads, and this is just for a mom and a kid."

When you're a celebrity, posing for pictures at an event is generally part of the deal. However, they often have to deal with paparazzi trying to snap their photos even when they're "off duty." In either situation, they should be able to reasonably expect their boundaries to be respected, but unfortunately, that's not always the case.

Here are 18 times celebrities confronted or called out photographers and paparazzi:

1. On the red carpet at the 2024 VMAs, Chappell Roan shouted back at a photographer who shouted profanities (though it's unclear whether the photographer was addressing her or someone else).

2. At the Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour movie premiere about a month later, Chappell Roan confronted a red carpet photographer for their alleged previous behavior towards her. She seemingly said, "You were so disrespectful to me at the Grammys. You yelled at me at the Grammy party. Yes, I remember."

3. In 2017, Justin Bieber was involved in a car accident with a paparazzo as photographers surrounded his vehicle. The singer got out of his car and waited with the pap (who had "non life-threatening injuries to his lower body") until medical help and police arrived.

A few weeks later, Justin crossed paths with another paparazzo who was there that day and confronted him. In a video captured by TMZ, the singer asked, "Why were you so mean that day? The day of the crash."

4. In a viral incident from 2023, amid rumors that Becky G's then-fiancé had cheated on her, paparazzi swarmed her at the Mexico City International Airport. They created a chaotic and potentially dangerous situation.

Addressing the incident on her Instagram Stories, she called for "boundaries." She said (translated from Spanish via Hola!), "First of all, I want to say to all the people who were there; I hope you’re doing well. I know it was a very intense moment, a crazy moment, and honestly, it’s something that impacted me in a very strong way, and I want to talk about it because I felt so nervous, too."

5. In 2024, Syndey Sweeney told Glamour that paparazzi stood outside her house in Florida, yelling at her family. She said, "They said, 'If you tell her to just come outside in a bikini, I'll take pictures and then I'll leave you alone.'"

6. In 2021, Blake Lively called out paparazzi for taking pictures of her children. Commenting on a since-deleted Daily Mail Australia Instagram post featuring a picture of her with her three daughters and one of Blake waving to the camera, she reportedly said, "You edit together these images to look like I'm happily waving, but that is deceitful."

7. Then, in 2022, Blake Lively shared an Instagram carousel to thwart paparazzi who were trying to get pictures of her pregnant. She captioned it, "Here are photos of me pregnant in real life, so the 11 guys waiting outside my home for a 🦄 sighting will leave me alone."

8. In a 2024 Instagram post from the Paris Olympics — which she attended with her husband Ryan Gosling and their children, whom they keep out of the public eye — Eva Mendes said, "The minute I see photographers when I'm out, my guard and my wall goes up."

9. In 2018, Issa Rae tweeted, "At the airport, heard Paparazzi behind me say, 'That's Issa Rae' and then watched as they went to snap a picture of a black actress who was not me. #Famous."

Rachel seemingly replied, "Sorry? I'm a human. Talk to me as such!"

11. In 2021, Jennifer Garner told The Hollywood Reporter that, after she had her first baby in 2005, up to 20 paparazzi would lie in wait at the end of her driveway, and for the next few years, they were always following her. She said, "You'd go through a yellow light, and 15, 20 cars would go through the red light behind you, driving up on the side of roads, and this is just for a mom and a kid."

12. In a 2024 video captured by TMZ, Ben Affleck confronted paparazzi outside his house. Pulling over and getting out of his car, he said, "You're gonna get me into an accident. Don't flash your lights when someone is driving down the driveway. Don't do that. That's dangerous. I can't see! You're gonna get somebody hurt doing this shit!"

13. In 2021, Sophie Turner — who doesn't post her children's pictures publicly to protect their privacy — called out paparazzi who captured and sold pictures of her then-9-month-old daughter. On her Instagram Story, she said, "Yesterday some paparazzi managed to get a picture of my daughter and I, and I just want to say that the reason that I am not posting pictures of my daughter and making sure that we can avoid paparazzi at all costs is because I explicitly do not want those photos out there."

14. In a series of Instagram Stories in 2024, Mandy Moore called out paparazzi who'd been following her family around.

15. In 2024, paparazzi images of Vanessa Hudgens and her husband Cole Tucker leaving the hospital with their newborn leaked before the couple could share the birth announcement themselves. On her Instagram Story, Vanessa called out the disrespect of her family's privacy.

16. In a since-deleted 2018 tweet, model Nyle DiMarco shared a video of himself on the VMAs red carpet. He captioned it, "retweet if you can hear paparazzis yelling to my deaf-ass ears lmao."

17. In a 2021 Instagram post during her vacation, Britney Spears said, "So being here in Maui is pretty crazy now … the paps know where I am and it's really not fun !!!! It's pretty hard going anywhere cause these silly faces keep popping up to take my picture 📸🙄 … but not only do they take my picture … they distort my body and mess with the image and it's embarrassing 😬😳🙃 !!!!!"

18. And finally, when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were leaving a New York City charity event in 2023, so many paparazzi chased them that they had to take cover in a local police station.

In a joint statement, Meghan and Harry said, "While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone's safety."
