The 49ers, the defending NFC champions, were officially eliminated from playoff contention before their Week 16 game against Miami even began, thanks to victories by Washington and the Los Angeles Rams.

This marks a disappointing end to a season that has been marred by injuries, including Trent Williams' ankle injury, which has kept him out for the past four games.

Williams, who aggravated the injury during the Week 11 loss to the Seahawks, hasn't been able to return to practice, and with two years remaining on his contract, his absence has left a significant gap in the 49ers' offense.

While Jaylon Moore has stepped in at left tackle, there's no replacing Williams' combination of talent and leadership.

The 49ers' offense has also been hampered by the absence of key playmakers like Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk, with the team never having all three on the field together this season. As a result, the offense has taken a noticeable step back, and Williams' continued absence has only highlighted those struggles.

At 36, Williams has not yet indicated any plans to retire after the 2025 season. But this marks the second consecutive year that Trent Williams has missed multiple games due to injury.

The 49ers struggled in his absence last season, going 0-2, and their record without him has been only marginally better this year, at 1-4. However, Williams isn't the only key player the 49ers have been without during this challenging stretch, as other valuable contributors have also missed time. With a 6-9 record, San Francisco's NFC title defense has all but unraveled.

The 49ers have two remaining games this season, facing the Detroit Lions (13-2) and the Arizona Cardinals (7-8), as they look to salvage some pride before the year ends.
