Philadelphia 76ers star guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to miss a few weeks due to a right hamstring injury. The team is bracing for a long absence from Maxey.
NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN reported the news on social media.
Philadelphia just got forward Paul George back from an early season injury and they are still without big man Joel Embiid. This injury to Maxey is just the latest in some tough news for the 76ers to open the season.
They will be cautious with Maxey as they need him for the stretch run. He was expected to be part of the three-headed monster that the 76ers created this offseason.
The young guard has heavily improved his play over the past few years, emerging as a legitimate scorer for the 76ers. Last season, he averaged 25.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game.
Maxey shot 37.3 percent from beyond the arch last year, giving the 76ers another option behind Embiid. Maxey took a step forward after James Harden left the team and Philadelphia was comfortable handing him a massive extension this past offseason.
The two sides agreed to a 5-year, $204M extension that would keep him in Philadelphia for years to come. Maxey is only 24 years old so he still has plenty to do and prove in the NBA.
This injury to Maxey is a blow to the 76ers this early on in the year. Philadelphia has started the year with a record of 1-6 but injuries to their key players have been the main reason why.
Embiid should be back soon and is expected to make his season debut next week against the New York Knicks. He has currently been dealing with an injury and is now finishing up a three-game suspension after an altercation with a Philadelphia columnist.
Charnia confirmed that Embiid would suit up next week for the 76ers.
"Joel Embiid is ready," said Charania. "Sources tell me he will make his season debut next Tuesday at home in the Sixers' NBA Cup opener. He'll serve his three-game suspension tonight against the Clippers, Friday against the Lakers, and Sunday at home against the Hornets."
Getting the former MVP back should help things but Phialdelphia will need to wait to see their big three in action on the court together. The 76ers can't allow the year to fully slip away from them so pilling some wins up while Maxey recovers from injury will be crucial.
