The Boston Red Sox were heavily rumored to be interested in free-agent outfielder Teoscar Hernández. The 32-year-old was looked at as a solid backup plan after missing on Soto. But Boston has now missed out on both Soto and Hernández after it was announced the right-handed slugger was headed back to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now the Red Sox will need to pivot to another backup plan and FanSided's Christopher Kline has the perfect idea. Kline recently suggested the Red Sox could swing a blockbuster trade for Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr.
"At just 27 years old, Robert is still, theoretically, on the upswing," Kline wrote. "If he can get healthy and get back into a rhythm, the Red Sox could have their cleanup man of the future. His contract includes affordable $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, so Boston can plan on three full years of Robert's contributions.
"The combination of age, contract, and upside here is hard to come by. There is risk, sure, but Robert is due for a bounce back. It ought to come easier if he's in a winning situation. The Red Sox should absolutely poke around Chicago one last time."
If the Red Sox can land Robert without giving up any of their top-tier prospects, they'll be in great shape. Boston has already landed a huge deal with the White Sox. Making another one, this time for Robert, would make perfect sense, especially if the Red Sox can help him play like he did in 2023.
