Aaliyah has been officially immortalized in a Barbie doll for what would’ve been her 46th birthday. The doll is part of the Barbie Music Collector Series.
Inspired by her “One In A Million” music video, the doll is wearing a black faux leather ensemble with studded details, oversized sunglasses and her signature hairstyle.
Preorders for the doll were available on MattelCreations.com and sold out within 30 minutes, per The Detroit News. It was also available on Target’s website, and may restock on its official release date—Jan. 26.
“I can vividly remember my sister playing with her favorite Barbie dolls for hours when we were kids,” said Aaliyah’s brother Rashad Haughton in a statement when speaking about the limited edition collector’s item. “She would make them sing, dance, and perform little concerts. It’s clear to me now that she was imagining dreams that would eventually become reality when she embarked on a career in entertainment at just fifteen years old.”
He added, “Inspiring confidence, belief in yourself and embracing who you truly are is the essence of Barbie. My sister would be ecstatic to see her legacy celebrated this way.”
Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel, shared, “We hope the Aaliyah Barbie serves as a powerful reminder to her loyal fans and Barbie collectors everywhere that, like Aaliyah, they can unlock their limitless potential and achieve anything they set their minds to.”
Since Aaliyah’s death in 2001, she’s had posthumous collaborations with MAC Cosmetics and her music has since been made available to stream.
