The Australian actress and singer-songwriter, 55, known for the film The Crossing and the show Hampton Court, as well as songs such as Blast Off and On Your Side, is celebrating the release of her powerful new single, Regenerate.

The talented musician and artist is also premiering the visually-stunning official music video for the track – and you've perhaps never seen her like this before.

Spencer previously said in an interview that she had prioritised motherhood over her career. But now, as her two sons with Russell Crowe have grown up, she's ready.

"It feels like the right time for me. I feel really positive about putting music out," Spencer says.

"The music industry is in a strange place in a lot of ways, but for me personally, this just feels right for me at this time. I feel excited about it and ready to do it."

"I hope it translates that feeling that we all have the capability to constantly restart ourselves," Spencer says about Regenerate, with 9honey getting an exclusive first look at the music video before it's released on YouTube on February 9.

"It's sort of a message of hope and a message that as humans we do have that ability to regenerate and reboot ourselves and get back on track.

"I'm coming back after 14 years and it is that kind of concept of having to reboot yourself every now and then in life."

Speaking about the film clip, which was shot in one day and sees Spencer wear a series of incredible outfits, eye makeup and wigs, the singer says: "I think I wanted to kind of push it a bit, to push the theatrical aspect of it a bit."

"I didn't want to to just be me sitting at a piano, dressed in black as a singer and songwriter.

"This time around, I thought, 'If I'm doing another music project I want to indulge my theatrical side of it all'.

"I have a past in theatre and dance. I wanted to combine those elements in this video and take it to a more extreme place."

Spencer, who is the daughter of singer-songwriter and Playschool host Don Spencer, 87, says the songwriting process for her is "very personal and isolated".

She also speaks about the special bond she shares with her famous dad – and, in fact, both her parents – and says he was always very "encouraging" of her music ambitions growing up.

"I have a very tight bond with my dad, and my mum actually, I'm great friends with both of them," Spencer says.

"Obviously, he has always been very encouraging with music, he started teaching me to play piano at five.

"He's always been very supportive and also said you have to be realistic in a tough industry. So I didn't enter it with any sort of naivety."

Spencer, who is set to headline the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Party in March, says she always looked up to the late David Bowie due to his fierce creativity and "authenticity".

"I love his authenticity, the fact nobody else is like David Bowie," she explains.

"His music was always interesting and pushing boundaries and he didn't care, he did whatever he wanted and he was amazing and just incredibly imaginative and pushed all of those boundaries.

"I loved the theatricality, the mood of a lot of his songs and how unique the songs were, I found him really inspiring."

Spencer, who is the ex-wife of Hollywood star Russell Crowe, says she once met Bowie and he was just as "lovely" as she hoped.

"Getting to meet him later was just lovely," she says.

"And it was particularly nice to meet someone you've admired from afar for so long, who you admired as a kid and you find out they're lovely."

Spencer also gave some advice to any up-and-coming Aussie musicians, saying authenticity is important.
