Al Pacino, the iconic actor of The Godfather fame, opened up about a shocking experience from the early days of his career when he was nearly kidnapped by a fan.
In his newly released memoir, Sonny Boy, the 84-year-old actor shares details of a harrowing night when a seemingly innocent ride home almost turned into a life-threatening situation.
Pacino recalled the night when he went out for drinks with Richard Hackman, brother of actor Gene Hackman, and ended up too intoxicated to find his way home.
A woman, offering him a ride, appeared to be his saving grace. But soon after getting into her car, Pacino realized something wasn't right.
"A woman said to me, 'Oh, I'll drive you home.' And without a second thought, I got into her car with her," Pacino explained to People.
However, as they drove, he realized she wasn't taking him in the right direction. When he confronted her, she brazenly responded, "I'm kidnapping you."
Quick thinking saved Pacino
Pacino's instincts immediately kicked in. "I am from the South Bronx. When I see some crazy person trying to do something to me, I know how to escape," he wrote in his memoir.
He even considered jumping from the moving vehicle to escape. "I opened the door as if to jump out of the car," Pacino remembered, ready to act despite being intoxicated.
Faced with his determination, the woman eventually relented and agreed to take him home. Pacino escaped unharmed, but the incident left a lasting impression.
In addition to the kidnapping scare, Pacino's memoir dives deep into other life experiences, from his difficult childhood in New York to his battles with personal trauma.
One memorable incident from his youth involved a painful accident while attempting to tightrope walk on a fence. "To this day, I'm haunted by the thought of it," he admitted.
With Sonny Boy, Pacino opens the door to some of his most personal and terrifying moments, giving fans a raw look into the life of the legendary actor.
