Amber and Johnny connected in 2009 while filming The Rum Diary, although they were both in relationships with other people at the time. When the press tour rolled around in 2011, the pair began their romance, finally going public in 2013.
The duo married in February 2015, but their tumultuous union came to an end in May 2016, when Amber filed for divorce and accused Johnny of domestic violence. He was never charged in relation to her claims, and their divorce was finalized in 2017.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star sued his ex-wife for defamation in 2019 over an op-ed Amber wrote for the Washington Post, claiming she “became a public figure representing domestic abuse.”
On June 1, 2022, a Fairfax County, Virginia, jury determined Amber defamed Johnny. He was awarded $5 million in punitive damages and $10 million in compensatory damages, while awarding Amber $2 million in compensatory damages in her counterclaim.
