It’s a “Friday Night Lights” reunion, set in the Wild West.
Taylor Kitsch teams up again with his “Friday Night Lights” creator Peter Berg for limited series “American Primeval.” The cast also includes Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Shea Whigham, and more.
The show is set in 1857 America. The official synopsis for “American Primeval” reads: “This is America…1857. Up is down, pain is everywhere, innocence and tranquility are losing the battle to hatred and fear. Peace is the shrinking minority, and very few possess grace — even fewer know compassion. There is no safe haven in these brutal lands, and only one goal matters: survival.”
The series is a “fictionalized dramatization and examination of the violent collision of culture, religion, and community as men and women fight and die to keep or control this land,” per the logline.
Joe Tippett, Jai Courtney, Kyle Bradley Davis, Lucas Neff, Derek Hinkey, Saura Lightfoot Leon, Preston Mota, and Shawnee Pourier round out the cast.
“American Primeval” is directed and executive produced by Peter Berg, with Mark L. Smith (“The Midnight Sky,” “The Revenant”) as the creator, writer, and executive producer. Eric Newman and Alex Gayner also executive produce.
Julie O’Keefe serves as the Indigenous Cultural Consultant and Project Advisor. The series features artisans including Hovia Edwards-Yellowjohn (Shoshone Bannock-Navajo), Pete Yellowjohn (Shoshone Bannock), Georgette Running Eagle (Shoshone Bannock), Robert Perry, Kugee Supernaw (Quapaw and Osage) and Son Supernaw (Quapaw-Osage and Caddo), Joe Cheshawalla (Osage) Debbie Cheshawalla (Choctaw), and Molly Murphy Adams (Oglala Lakota).
Meanwhile, back in a more modern America, Berg is set to revisit “Friday Night Lights” with a reboot of the NBC series. The original, beloved series ran from 2006 to 2011. The announced reboot, with Berg returning as a producer along with Jason Katims and Brian Grazer, has already divided fans. According to early reports, the series will center on a new story with new characters, while still being set in the world of high school football. The original series starred Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Taylor Kitsch, and Jesse Plemons.
“American Primeval” premieres January 9 on Netflix. Check out the trailer below.
