Prince Andrew’s relationship with King Charles has gotten even worse as a new report reveals they’re not even speaking. Now, a palace insider exclusively tells In Touch this spells bad news and major stress for his long-suffering ex wife Sarah Ferguson, who fears his exile could result in hers as well.
The royal feud, mirroring the bad blood between Charles’ two sons Harry and William, started with the king’s apparent disapproval with how his brother Andrew handled accusations of abuse and sex crimes levied by an alleged victim, Virginia Giuffre, with whom the Duke of York settled out of court.
For the past two years, Charles, 76, has been attempting to evict Andrew, 64, from the Royal Lodge, and has cut the ignominious royal off financially. Andrew’s ex wife, Sarah, 65, who divorced the prince in 1996, has also come under fire in the press for her ex husband’s allegedly sordid behavior. The insider notes that, while “Sarah has been patiently standing by and trying to play Switzerland between Andrew and his family for so many years now,” the constant media and personal assaults have been “really wearing her down.”
Unable to find any shelter in the public’s opinion, despite the FBI icing a probe into his actions, “Andrew is still hyper dependent on her and expects her to take his side in everything, no matter what, which is really asking an awful lot since there’s so much at stake for Sarah.”
Sarah has remained close to the royal family, as the mother of two princesses, Eugenie and Beatrice, who themselves have been attempting to warm royal relations with their father back up over the years.
However, with the king apparently drawing a serious line regarding Andrew, the source reasons she needs to start considering what supporting the shamed royal could mean for her and her children.
“She still loves Andrew like a brother, but she also needs to think of her own future and the reality is if she gets on the bad side of Charles it could cost her a whole lot.”
Another source, former royal correspondent Stephen Bates told the U.K.-based paper The Times that “Charles realized that Andrew’s association with [Jeffrey] Epstein made him a loose cannon … The allegations about his behavior were never successfully quelled and made him damaged goods.”
With Sarah’s ex now royally “damaged goods,” it’s unlikely he’ll be making any official appearances, including this year’s family Christmas celebrations at Sandringham.
“The holidays are shaping up to be incredibly awkward because the word is Charles doesn’t want Andrew to even show his face at Sandringham,” the first source says. “It directly impacts Sarah because she’s going to have no choice but to take Andrew’s side. She’s actually very welcome but she can’t very well go if Andrew is banned.”
“And if he does go then she’s got to show him some support or he’ll fly off the handle. It’s a total nightmare for her, she’s so sick and tired of being dragged down by him.”
