Movie star Angelina Jolie has shared an emotional update as she revealed how she was left in tears whilst shooting her latest film as she faced her greatest fear head on.

As her glittering career continues, the 49-year-old Hollywood icon's latest role saw her cast as iconic 1950s and 60s opera star Maria Callas, meaning she was faced with one of her greatest fears - singing on screen.

Describing the bittersweet moment when she was tasked with singing in the film, she said: "(Director Pablo Larrain) took me seriously as a singer, which was very moving to me. He said: 'Take a deep breath and then start to make sounds' - and I started crying," she told Hello! magazine.

She added: "Because I think we all hold so much in that we don't really let out."

Despite feeling some trepidation at first, the actress soon found her passion for her new found skill, and has urged others to follow suit: "I would encourage every single person to take an opera class.

"Once you sing a little bit and somebody says to you: 'Now give everything you've got in your body as loud as you can possibly do it, with all the emotion that you carry inside yourself', it's very therapeutic."

The star of the silver screen revealed how she was spurred on in her singing pursuits by her six children, admitting that they originally conveyed their pride in their mothers attempts, but that soon turned to genuine acclaim as her singing prowess began to blossom.

In a stunning career that has spanned across four decades, Angelina's breakthrough film came in 1995 when she starred in cult classic Hackers. With countless more acting roles to follow, her career reached it's pinnacle when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2000 for her role in Girl, Interrupted.

But away from her acting roles, Angelina has also been thrust into the spotlight for her private life in recent years. Her split from her ex-husband Brad Pitt became official last month, having called time on their marriage nine years ago. First meeting on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith in 2005 the pair went on to share six children togehter; Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.
