Aubrey Plaza was noticeably absent from the Golden Globes following the tragic death of her husband, Jeff Baena, at the age of 47. The director was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home on Friday, January 3.

Emergency services arrived at his residence at 10.25am and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The LA County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled Jeff's death as suicide. A spokesperson for Jeff's family, including his wife Aubrey, confirmed that they are devastated by the heartbreaking news. They requested privacy during this difficult time.

The Dirty Grandpa actress, 40, was scheduled to appear at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards alongside co-presenters Salma Hayek, Anya Taylor-Joy and Anthony Ramos, but did not attend according to PEOPLE.

Baena and Plaza's love story began in 2011 during her audition for his movie Life After Beth. This marked the beginning of their creative and romantic journey, which included collaborations on films like Joshy (2016) and Horse Girl (2020). In December 2021, after ten years together, Baena proposed, reports the Mirror.

They kept it hush-hush, but lovebirds Aubrey Plaza and Jeff Baena secretly said "I do" away from the prying eyes of the public. Taking to Instagram with a loving shout-out, Plaza casually dropped the "husband" bomb in May 2021, while raving about their joint venture Spin Me Round.

She couldn't help but brag about her other half's Italian film escapade, posting: "So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to Italia to cause some more trouble [devil emoji]," as she spilled the beans on their creative collaboration. Throughout their romance, the duo has been the epitome of low-key, keeping their personal life out of the spotlight and opting not to have children.

Miami-born Jeff swapped coasts for the Big Apple to pursue his cinematic dreams at film school before heading to Los Angeles to make his mark as a filmmaker. His breakthrough came with Life After Beth, directing alongside his now-spouse.

In a candid chat with Seensome back in 2014, Baena opened up: "It's all I ever want to do; it felt really comfortable and fun. I've been a writer for twelve years now and it was always a means to an end, I never wanted to be a writer, I wanted to be a director so this was always my intention and it felt right."

Jeff Baena's family is quite extensive, including his wife and actress Aubrey Plaza, mother Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena, stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena, and stepsiblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
