Divorce is tough. Divorce is tougher when the process plays out almost entirely in the public eye. This is the challenge facing Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez right now as their paths separate following two tumultuous years of marriage.
Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in August, but the couple's failure to reach a prenuptial agreement has complicated the process. Nearly three months later, Lopez appears still to be living in the couple's unsold $60 million mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. while Affleck has tried to lose himself in work as the process drags on.
Affleck's greatest fear amid financial worries
While Lopez's net worth is estimated at roughly $400 million, Affleck's is measured at $150 million and he has much more to lose in the divorce without an amicable agreement. In an interview with Deadline, Affleck revealed that his margins are thin as he takes a more hands-on approach at Artists Equity, the production company he co-founded alongside longtime pal Matt Damon.
"This is the only thing I can count on, this upfront money. I don't know when this might go away," the "Argo" star said. "I'm one errant remark away from being canceled, or I'm one movie bomb away from never working again, and I've got a family and so forth."
Affleck co-parents three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, and his comments reflect the fragile nature of stardom and the difficulties inherent to being in the public eye for decades at a time. It also explains his reluctance toward being interviewed or filmed outside of the studio -- Affleck's contentious relationship with paparazzi is one reason his marriage to Lopez did not work out.
"We're all subject to this sort of insecurity in this business," Affleck told Deadline. "Whether we're actors or directors or writers, the phone could stop ringing for us."
The insecurity also extends to Lopez, who has been on an emotional rollercoaster in recent weeks, leading up to the release of the Affleck-produced sports biopic "Unstoppable", in which she stars.
