Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, is calling out Sexyy Red for sharing an AI-generated image of her late father.
The 26-year-old rapper raised eyebrows on Monday when she shared a photo to her X account, created with artificial intelligence, depicting herself with the late civil rights leader, clasping hands intimately in what looks like a nightclub.
Bernice King, 61, did not take kindly to seeing the fake “nightclub” image of her father and issued a response to her X account on Tuesday. Sexyy also shared a second photo of herself photoshopped into a scene from the historic March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom in August 1963, where King Jr. and others protested.
“This is intentionally distasteful, dishonoring, deplorable, and disrespectful to my family and my father, who is not here to respond himself because he was assassinated for working for your civil and human rights and to end war and poverty. Please delete.” wrote Bernice.
She continued, “Please don’t project your thoughts onto me. I don’t believe Sexyy Red to be a ‘degenerate,’ ‘ghetto,’ or ‘trash.’ I have spoken out in the past about the use of and comparison to either of my parents to denigrate other people. I just don’t understand this type of use of my father’s image (on #MLKDay, no less), in a way that does not convey what we know to be true about his service and sacrifice. Even if you disagree with him or with his tactics or even believe things said about him by people who hated him, why do this?”
One user countered Bernice’s objections to the AI-generated photo by saying, “lol not to be that guy but them n****s in Atlanta been putting yo daddy on flyers for YEARS. Also Mississippi and Alabama tryna celebrate Robert E Lee day on your dad's day. I think that's more pressing but hey what do I know.”
“How can you tell me how I should respond to disrespect of my father or assume that I don’t respond when it happens in other instances? I do, and have done so on this platform,” Bernice responded.
Both images of King Jr. and the Hood Hottest Princess have since been deleted.
