Billboard magazine has caused a stir by honouring Taylor Swift as the second biggest pop star of the 21st century, part of its list of the top 25 figures in the genre in the 21st century. Although the choice has already generated debate among music fans, what really sparked outrage was the video posted to celebrate her legacy, which included a clip linked to Kanye West's controversial song 'Famous'.
The video showed images from West's 2016 music video, where a wax figure of a naked Swift appears, accompanied by the phrase: "I feel like Taylor and I might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous". This reference, described at the time as misogynistic, stoked tensions between the two artists' followers, reigniting a media feud that has lasted for years.
Billboard apologizes for what happened
Swift's fans criticised the decision to include such material in a tribute designed to celebrate the artist's achievements. Some called it "distasteful" and a "slap in the face". On social media, hashtags such as #BillboardIsOverParty and #BillboardApologizeToTaylor quickly trended.
