Blue Jays, Red Sox Among Eight Teams Reportedly Interested In $150 Million Star

The Pete Alonso sweepstakes is going to be one of the more interesting stories to follow as the MLB season draws closer. It seems as though Alonso is holding out for a longer contract, but no team is willing to give it to him.

The New York Mets remain the favorites to land him, for obvious reasons, but they're not the only team in the race. In fact, Bob Nightengale of USA Today has reported there are eight different teams in pursuit of Alonso right now, including a pair of American League East powerhouses.

"There currently are eight teams showing at least some interest in Alonso, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox," Nightengale wrote. "But in the game of first base musical chairs where 11 teams have a new first baseman, Alonso is still left standing. He may have no choice but to return to the Mets on a short-term deal with an opt-out."

Boston has so much money and so much talent that it doesn't know what to do with it all. Adding Alonso would come with moving pieces. Triston Casas would either be traded or converted to a designated hitter. In all likelihood, the Red Sox would split Alonso and Casas at first base and DH to keep the legs fresh.

The Blue Jays are seemingly trying to add talent however they can. They already have one of the best first basemen in the league in Vladimir Guerrero Jr. If they add Alonso, Guerrero could shift over to third base so Alonso could slot in at first.

The Mets are still the favorites to land the slugger, but with there being eight teams in pursuit, things could change very quickly.
