The Atlanta Braves are searching for options to fill out their rotation.
Currently, the Braves have just four starting pitchers in Chris Sale, Spencer Strider, Reynaldo López and Spencer Schwellenbach. With needing a No. 5 starter, they could look no further than a former member of their division rival, the Philadelphia Phillies.
Spencer Turnbull is on the free agency market and is looking for an opportunity to join a team's rotation. Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report tabbed Turnbull as one of seven players on the market with "huge buy-low upside."
"An injury to Taijuan Walker last spring opened the door for Spencer Turnbull to start the year in the Phillies rotation after he signed a one-year, $2 million deal during the offseason, and he responded by posting a 1.67 ERA in 32.1 innings over six starts," wrote Reuter.
In hindsight, the Phillies would have benefited by keeping Turnbull in the rotation longer than they did. While he missed half of the season due to an injury, he has shown his ability to thrive in a rotation.
Turnbull posted a 4.13 ERA over the course of the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons in Detroit. In each of those seasons, he struck out at least seven batters every nine innings. Turnbull recorded 2.5 WAR in 2019 in 30 starts for the Tigers.
After making $2.2 million last season, Turnbull is set for a pay raise in 2025. His market value currently sits at $4.4 million and could sign a one- or two-year deal. He provides great value for a team looking for help in the back end of their rotation.
