Human Limbs Found On California Shoreline

More body parts have reportedly been recovered during a search of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County after a human leg washed up on shore the previous day.

Palos Verdes Estates Police Captain Aaron Belda said a second leg and femur were recovered on Thursday by officers and coroner investigators searching along the shoreline, with the limb first being spotted by a hiker, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Newsweek contacted the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department for comment via telephone and voicemail on Friday outside of regular office hours.

Why It Matters

The first human leg was found on the shoreline on Wednesday by 800 block of Paseo Del Mar—the same point where a boat used by two missing fishermen washed up earlier in the week, per the Times.

According to police, the two men went out in a small vessel on Monday afternoon after launching from San Pedro and were reported missing the following morning when they didn't return from their trip amid stormy conditions. It is unclear if the recovered body parts are linked to the men.

It is also the second time in two months that human body parts have been recovered from the peninsula. A skull and other bones were washed up in November.

What To Know

According to Fox 11 Los Angeles, police were first called to the shoreline near the 800 block of Paseo Del Mar at around 8.20 a.m. PST on Wednesday following the first reports of a human leg. The remains were confirmed to be human and removed by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

An initial search of the shore was conducted that day by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which deployed a cadaver dog, though no additional remains were discovered.

On Thursday, police officers and coroner investigators continued the shore search and the additional remains were discovered.

Speaking on Thursday, Belda said that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner would study the human remains and see if they are connected with the two fishermen who went missing on December 23.

Meanwhile, Monday also saw the historic Santa Cruz Wharf partially collapse during the storm, after which three people were rescued from the sea.

What People Are Saying

Fox 11 Los Angeles reporter Matthew Seedorff shared a video on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday showing the washed-up boat that the missing fishermen had been operating from.

He said: "Search and rescue efforts continue in Palos Verdes, CA for 2 missing fishermen. Their boat was located heavily damaged on the beach, but so far the men in their 50's haven't been found. A high surf advisory remains in effect off LA County through Wednesday."

What Happens Next

Police and coroners will continue investigating the body parts they recovered, with a particular view to seeing if they are linked to the two missing fishermen.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department (310)378-4211.
