Brooke Sheilds has explained why she didn't sue a doctor who performed surgery on her without consent

Brooke Shields has explained why she turned against suing a doctor who performed a deeply invasive medical procedure on her without her consent.

The 59-year-old American actress attracted shock and sympathy when she revealed that a doctor performed cosmetic surgery on her vaginal area while she was unconscious for another procedure - without asking or seeking her agreement. The star made the shocking admission as part of her biographical new book, titled Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.

Brooke is proud mother to daughters Rowan, 21, and Grier, 18, who she shares with film director husband Chris Henchy, 60 - who she has been married to since 2001. The star has spoken of the fact that she welcomed both of her children via caesarean section but a doctor assumed she had given birth to her children naturally.

In a searingly honest segment of her book, the A Castle for Christmas star revealed that she had visited a gynaecologist who recommended her to a doctor to perform a surgical process on her labia. She agreed to have a surgical procedure to the intimate part of her body - but was horrified when she woke after the surgery to be told that the doctor had decided to perform other work on her body while she was unconscious.

She recounted the doctor telling her: "I tightened you up a little bit! Gave you a little rejuvenation!" and explained that he had tightened her vagina as well as reducing the size of her labia. She recalled: "I was shocked… There was a real 'I threw this in for free, little lady' vibe to his delivery" - and also explained that far from improving her body, it was "not good".

Brooke went on to explain that she was left too embarrassed to take legal action against the doctor who operated on her. In an extract shared by People, she wrote: "I was horrified, but also at a loss. I didn’t want to sue this man — or maybe I did want to, but I didn’t feel I could — because I didn’t particularly want talk of my lady parts, once again, on the front page of every paper. This man surgically altered my body without my consent. And he thought he had done me a favour by throwing in a 'bonus procedure'? The sheer gall of it enraged me."

And she added: "I never took action against this doctor. I never even spoke to him about it again, in part because I had started to question myself, to wonder if he was right, that I should feel lucky. Or maybe, I thought, this was a needed improvement for my man, who was secretly dissatisfied but would have never dared address the subject of my “loose down-theres?” It’s crazy to me that these ideas even popped into my head. What’s even crazier is that I didn’t even discuss it with my husband until later. I can’t remember why I eventually told him, but he was nearly as angry as I was."

The Suddenly Susan alum previously spoke about her past traumas, including in her 2023 Pretty Baby documentary, in which she disclosed she was raped in her 20s by a Hollywood executive during what was supposed to be a meeting about a role. In the film, she said she chose not to report the assault, saying, "There was no way that I would have been able to feel that I would be heard or that it wouldn't destroy me."

She added: "I was at a tenuous place in my career, people weren't getting cast at my age. I couldn't afford to jeopardize that. So I got on my own journey to come to grips with it, and it's taken this long."
