What's New
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Santa Cruz Pier has partially collapsed and "is floating away" amid a high surf warning.
The NWS Bay Area account posted on Monday on X, formerly Twitter, saying, "A portion of the Santa Cruz Pier has collapsed, and is floating away. Look at the ominous wave action on the horizon. You are risking your life, and those of the people that would need to try and save you by getting in or too close to the water."
Newsweek left a voicemail for the Santa Cruz Police Department on Monday afternoon for additional information.
Why It Matters
Portions of the Pacific coast are currently under hazardous seas warnings, high surf warnings and coastal flood warnings. The NWS map says that Santa Cruz is under a high surf warning until 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
"For the High Surf Warning, dangerously large breaking waves of 30 to 40 feet, with largest wave sets up to 60 feet at favored spots. For the Coastal Flood Warning, coastal flooding in low lying areas," The NWS says.
The NWS warns of potentially life-threatening swimming conditions in the area.
This is a breaking news story that will be updated with additional information.
