Change This, Not That: 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Review

1 month ago 4

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan is a comfortable countryside cruiser. Its stately exterior elegance is only enhanced by its interior, which contains the best infotainment Mercedes offers on the market today.

Despite all its upside, all isn't rosy with the E-Class. But, it does enough to differentiate itself from the BMW 5 Series and Audi A5/S5 to make it the best in its class.

What we tested: Newsweek test drove a 2024 Mercedes-Benz E450 4MATIC Sedan in Verde Silver Metallic for this review. The car had a sticker price of $87,920 as equipped, which included extras tacked onto the $68,100 base price. A $1,150 destination charge was included in the total price.

KEEP: Divided screens

The Mercedes-Benz Hyperscreen had its moment in the sun, but the Mercedes-Benz Superscreen is where the real party is at. The Superscreen fuses two screens across the car's dashboard in a clean design that doesn't detract from the rest of the elegant aesthetics of the car.

The passenger screen allows front seat passengers to enjoy a game of Angry Birds or watch YouTube videos, or stream other content while the car is on the go, all without the driver being able to see it.

The orientation of the central screen means that it is demonstrably cooler in midday sun than the Hyperscreen is, which is a win.

CHANGE: Slow off the line

Once the turbocharged 3.0-line inline six-cylinder hybrid engine gets going, its 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque move. But, there's some turbo lag that is annoying, especially if you're starting from any sort of an incline where immediate power availability is preferred.

KEEP: Multiple interior appointment options

It's said that there's something for everyone in the world. When it comes to interior appointments in the Mercedes E-Class, there's something for nearly everyone. But, some of it, in my opinion, is downright ugly.

But, that's the beauty of having choice. You can choose to not have the Manufaktur Black Piano Lacquer "Flowing Lines" wood. Kudos to Mercedes for making five trim schemes and nine upholstery options available on the E450.

KEEP: Verde Silver Metallic

There's good car colors, and then there's good car colors.Verde Silver Metallic, a green-silve—ish hue, is spectacular. It's the right blend of elegance and eye-catching, not unlike the E-Class itself.

What's interesting here is that it's not a color that will easily translate to other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. In fact, a GLA SUV in this color might be just a little too reminiscent of a 1995 Toyota RAV4 in Ocean Mist.

CHANGE: Smartphone/CarPlay responsiveness

I like using Apple CarPlay in the background to play music streamed from my phone into the Mercedes-Benz infotainment system, allowing native navigation to take up the entire screen.

That said, what I absolutely hate is the delay in relay between the phone and the system. If a song you don't want to hear comes on it is seconds until it is turned off. It's easier to quickly mute a song you're trying to skip because it has curse words and there's kids in the car, rather than count on a skip to happen anytime soon.
