The official ChatGPT app for Windows is now available to all users, including those with free accounts. Initially, the app was exclusive to Plus subscribers, but as of version 2024.1011.2303.0, anyone with Windows 10 or 11 can install and use it.
Previously, many users were reporting that the Alt + Space shortcut to open the ChatGPT search box interfered with other apps like PowerToys. With this update, you can now customize the shortcut in ChatGPT Settings to fit your workflow. This makes it easier to use ChatGPT alongside other apps without interruptions.
The app packs familiar features from the web-based ChatGPT, like ChatGPT Search and Advanced Mode. But keep in mind that both of these are exclusive to ChatGPT Plus users, which costs $20/month.
Another addition is the screenshot feature, making it easy to send images to ChatGPT. Click the paperclip icon and select Take screenshot to capture and use screenshots in your chats. This popular feature from the macOS app is now available for Windows users.
Speaking of macOS, a new Work with apps feature has been introduced in the macOS version of ChatGPT. With it, ChatGPT can read code from other apps, such as an IDE or terminal, reducing the need for manual copying and pasting. OpenAI has announced that Work with apps will be coming to Windows in the next few months, ensuring parity between the Windows and macOS experiences. Learn more about this feature here:
For now, you can download the ChatGPT app for Windows from the Microsoft Store and enjoy even with a free account.
