Sir Chris Hoy has opened up about the moment he found out the ache he had was actually a tumour.

The multiple Olympic gold medal winner in an accomplished cycling career revealed back in February this year that he had been receiving chemotherapy following a cancer diagnosis. In October, he shared further details on his diagnosis- including the revelation that he had been given just two to four years to live

A tumour was found in his shoulder, and a second scan found primary cancer in his prostate, which had metastasised to his bones.

In his first TV interview since revealing the heartbreaking update, he said: "It was the biggest shock of my life. I remember the feeling of just absolute horror and shock. I just basically walked back in a daze. I couldn't believe the news and I was just trying to process it, I don't remember walking.

"I just remember sort of halfway home thinking 'where am I?' And then I was thinking 'how am I going to tell Sarra? What am I going to say?'." In the same interview, he said he felt 'no symptoms, no warnings, nothing'. He told The BBC that the diagnosis came out of nowhere.

"All I had was a pain in my shoulder and a little bit of pain in my ribs. [This] ache and pain didn't go away. I assumed it was going to be tendonitis or something, and it was just going to be lay off weights or lay off cycling for a wee while and get some treatment and it'll be fine," he explained.

Chris previously revealed that his wife Sarra is battling "very active and aggressive" MS, having received her diagnosis just seven days after he was informed his cancer was terminal. He explained to The Times: "It was so hard to try to compute that she had absorbed the awfulness of this diagnosis alone, without sharing it with me, in order to protect me. I tried to let the words sink in as my mind was spinning, trying to understand what had been happening to her, all while she had been accompanying me to every one of my own hospital appointments.

"As with my diagnosis, she was the one to bring me back to the present, trying to reassure me, saying: 'Look at me, I'm fine right now, I'm here, I'm OK.'"
